Say what you wish about homeopathic medicine and home remedies, I know they work for a lot of differnt things. So, with that in mind here is where you can share yours....
I have RA and there are times I can barely move. Here are a couple of things I make that help me...
Pepper plaster – this is based on the mustard plaster idea, but perfected a bit for better results.
You will need –
tube socks with the toes cut out (these MUST be washed completely separately from any other clothing!!!!) Just trust me on this. I would not lie to you!! The pain that can result, while entertaining to those around you, is NOT as funny as they think!
1/4 tsp ground hot pepper seeds. More or less per ability to withstand the burning. I’m up to ¾ after 6 years. Just remember the hotter the pepper, the hotter this will be….
Mineral oil enough to liberally cover the joint ½ to ¾ of a cup.
A pinch of Ground eucalyptis (optional for cooling) This gives you the icy/hot thing, but, it can also cover the pepper smell well if you are wearing your plasters under clothing. I do it daily in the winter and keep a baby jar of pepper Vaseline in my desk. Pre-mixed it will last and work about 3 weeks, BUT, it loses a bit of the punch daily.
Now I just save all of the seeds and ribs from the peppers I use when I cook, so it can be a combo of a bunch of different kinds of peppers. I dry them and them just throw them all in the same jar and pull them out when I need them.
Mix the ground pepper with about ½ to ¾ of a cup of mineral oil. I have used Vaseline, olive oil, vegetable oil, baby oil. I don’t like baby oil, the pepper breaks something down and the smell is just disgusting. Let this sit for eh, about half an hour. You can use the “sniff” test. If it makes your eyes water, it is mixed well, if not, mix more and wait a bit more.
Dampen one tube sock or towel and microwave until steaming. Once it can be tolerated (try for as hot as you can stand) cover the problem joint with the tube sock then while still warm spread the plaster oil all over and around the joint onto the tube sock. Cover with second sock. Now what I do is buy those support hose and use those as a kind of pressure holding over the outside tube sock. It keeps everything in place. You can wear as long as you wish.
DIET –
Useful herbs you can add to your diet easily – Oregano (is a great anti-inflamatory), flax (add the toasted seeds to salads or whatever), ginger – a MUST I add to almost everything I eat and I keep the crystallized ginger in a Ziploc in my bag. Tumeric – great in rice, parsley – add to everything, wild yam and yucca.
Pineapple (fresh) has made a big leap in the RA world. Mix a cup of fresh diced pineapple with a scraping of fresh ginger and yoghurt at least 3 times a week.
