Smithsonian scientists and their colleagues have uncovered a new threat posed by invasive Burmese pythons in Florida and the Everglades: The snakes are not only eating the area's birds, but also the birds' eggs straight from the nest. The results of this research add a new challenge to the area's already heavily taxed native wildlife.

I couldn't think of anything to write for your irrational fear census ..... 'What lies beneath' is a perfectly rational fear for anyone who likes to float around on ponds, but now you have given shape and substance to that fear. Tell me they can't swim.

Most snakes are adept swimmers,Burmese pythons no exception, they sometimes prey on alligators...and alligators on them.
Don't go to the everglades Ducky,I fear for your safety.

I saw an Animal Planet or maybe Nova special on that very subject.
When we lived in Naples, we went out to the Everglades a LOT. We found a reticulated python on one trip, gave it to the Miami Serpentarium.
You see Burmese pythons all over the place in the glades now a days. They pay you to capture them. Both the Miami and the St. Cloud Serpentariums will take any type of python or boa you find.

People continue to do stupid things in nature. news.yahoo.com/blogs/sideshow/maryland-offering-200-gift-cards-dead-snakehead-fish-163943568.htmlThe Maryland Department of Natural Resources Inland Fisheries (DNR) is hoping so and is offering $200 gift cards through Bass Pro Shops to residents who capture and kill a snakehead, an invasive species from Africa that is upsetting the natural order of the local ecosystem. "We do not want snakeheads in our waters," DNR Director Don Cosden tells FoxNews.com. "This initiative is a way to remind anglers that it is important to catch and remove this invasive species of fish."
