American crackpot inventors LithPort Group, are planning to build a space elevator to the Moon. myscienceacademy.org/2012/08/29/elevator-to-the-moon-to-become-reality-in-8-years/Using magic "ribbon cables", they estimate it will be up and running, in 8 years! The first step will be to "create a floating balloon platform tethered to the ground so that a robot can climb 1.2 miles (2 kilometers) into the sky". This ought to be interesting. But they said the Channel Tunnel was just a crazy pipe dream, and look at that now! Let's just hope the moon offers a more attractive proposition than France.

Arthur C Clarke was a great advocate of this thing. NASA in fact have spent a great deal of time and money looking at it and there are a lot of people who feel that had it been undertaken earlier it would have saved a great deal of time and trouble and expense for the space programme. It's got to be built on the equator - does it say that in your link (I didn't click it. I couldn't be arsed)....

If it was Willy Wonka making the proposals, it would be more credible.

The problem is finding a material with suficient tensile strength to remain thethered to the earth at one end and in geostationary orbit at t'other. There's a hilarious and at the same time fascinating piece on space elevators in The Science Of Discworld by Terry Pratchett,Jack Cohen and Ian Stewart.

And then along came a... hurricane. Maybe they can send all the hungry people on earth up there. They will be so amazed by our technological capabilities they will forget about their swelling bellies.
