So many are cheering after passage of this new bill. I say they are wrong to cheer, they should feel their blood running cold. Any time the government moves to further restrict civil rights is a time to rebel, not cheer. The new law will have strong implications for the Westboro Baptist Church, a Kansas-based organization which the Southern Poverty Law Center and the Anti-Defamation League have labeled a hate group. Westboro Baptist Church has drawn media attention for its brand of protest, which frequently links the deaths of soldiers to America's growing acceptance of gays. Under the new legislation, protests must be held at least 300 feet from military funerals and are prohibited two hours before or after a service. The law counters a 2011 Supreme Court ruling, which found that displays such as Westboro's were protected under the First Amendment. www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/08/06/honoring-americas-veterans-act-obama_n_1748454.html

I have a feeling that if it was anything other than protests at funerals, and especially anyone other than the Westboro crazies people would be in an uproar.
But they are all blinded by who is involved, and sadly most don't seem to understand the concept of the ripple effect.
edit: I also notice that article didn't touch on anything other than the protests.
Sadly the rest of the act seems to be a good thing (granted I just took a glance at it) and likely those benefits wouldn't have gone through if it wasn't for the protest bit :/

I'm fine with it. It's not public demonstration it's harassment.

Yeah and pretty soon under the same laws peace protesters will be moved away from war memorials and the recruiting office because they are "harassing" as well.

you can't harass a war memorial, you can harass someone actively sticking their son in the ground

you can't harass a war memorial, you can harass someone actively sticking their son in the ground Oh, I like the cut of your jib. But whilst the behaviour of the Westboro Baptist Clan is utterly deplorable and crass, I have a feeling that protecting mourners from this shower of ghouls wasn't the primary impetus behind the Government's passing of this Bill. As with so much new legislation nominally brought in to "adjust" someone's rights , there will be a hidden agenda sloping into the statute books on it's coat tails. I'd hazard a guess at it being something like "No person to approach closer than 300ft to any Military Installation, Vehicle, or Personnel". This will offer a fairly wide window for Tactically Robust Enforcement Protocols (T.R.E.Pro.?) when Obama has to call in the Military to quell the widespread public disorder he has planned soon in order to implement the opening of his Fema Camps for business. And even if Mitt Romney should somehow be occupying the Whitehouse (like anyone would notice any switchover anyway) when the shit hits the fan, it will make no difference, because they are both sucking on the in the scabby, Reptilian teats of their Global Overlods equally committed to The Patriot Act.

Westboro aside, this was aimed at the Occupy movement, pure and simple.

People crushed by law, have no hopes but from power. If laws are their enemies, they will be enemies to laws; and those who have much to hope and nothing to lose, will always be dangerous.
