Initially I asked this on Yahoo as a troll. Specifically to upset the fuckwits in Law and Ethics.
But as I researched the figures it got more and more serious and it will not last there, so I put it here too.
If the US & the UK are such bastions of freedom, why do they both imprison more of their own citizenry?
than most other nations on earth?
The US: 1 in every 99.6 Americans is a prisoner.
UK: 1 in every 148 citizens is a prisoner.
The US has the highest incarceration rate in the world and the UK the Highest incarceration rate in Europe.
China: 1 in every 111 citizens.
Venezuela: 1 in every 152 citizens is a prisoner.
Turkey: 1 in every 174 citizens is a prisoner.
Iran: 1 in every 193 citizens is a prisoner.
100% of all military helmets, ID tags, bullet proof vests and ammunition belts are produced by US prison labour.
93% of all domestically produced house paints are produced in US prisons.
36% of domestically produced home appliances are made in prisons.
21% of all domestically produced office furniture is made in prisons.
The wage for a US prisoner employed at any of these tasks is 25 cents an hour.
But wait: There's more:
25% of the world's prisoners are in US gaols.
More African American teenage males are in prison than are in College.
1 in 9 African American males is either in prison or has been in prison at some stage of his life.
Jeeze I wonder why there are no manufacturing jobs on the outside - and why African American communities seem to have a lot of single mothers hanging about.
UK:
England and Wales have the highest per capita prison population in Western Europe -
Scotland, is also above average.
Northern Ireland, however, is among those countries with the lowest rates of imprisonment.
Italy's prisons are the most crowded, with an occupancy level of 131.5%.
Belgium has the most un-sentenced prisoners and the Netherlands has the most women prisoners.
