At least the wind has shifted and is blowing the smoke away from us now. We had a real rough couple of days earlier. A wildfire in Gila National Forest burned through more timber and brush lands as it forced the evacuation of residents living near a privately owned ghost town in southwestern New Mexico, officials said. Fueled by strong, erratic winds, the Whitewater-Baldy Complex fire burning through rugged and remote terrain grew Saturday to an estimated 100,000 acres, or more than 150 square miles. It was still 0 percent contained. news.yahoo.com/mexico-fire-grows-forces-evacuation-083350252.html

I would head for somewhere cooler if I was you for your health's sake, it's been blasted hot here today and I got a tad sunburnt, forgot to put my block on my arms. OK I needed some sun, but I hadn't moisturised them either so it was stupid I am usually on it with protection from sun.

It's all those discarded bottles magnifying the sun I think they should all be collected up if I see one in the forest I will try to.

We like some heat, we are in the lower mountains now, so it's not getting too hot. The fire is about 90 - 100 miles from here. Tomorrow is moving day, but we have a spot fairly close picked out to stay for 6 days, then will probably come back here.
From my seat in the house I can see the lake with the mountains behind it, very pretty.

My part of the Dakotas has had more than ample rain the last 5 years and ungrazed land in conservation is choked with surplus fuel for prairie fires if we get a dry spell. I've seen some bad fires over the years. The worst was on a 110 F day with 50 mph winds in 91, it killed cattle in their tracks, even killed deer and the like. Prairie fires don't last long but they move at the speed of the wind.

I honestly fear wild prairie fires. Where we lived in Kansas they burn the prairie every year to promote fresh growth, but it is very controlled.
The wind and incredibly rough terrain is keeping anyone from being able to contain the fire here.

We're already on High alert for fires and an open fire ban is in place for most of the state. It's the high winds, heat and dry winter we had. It's a huge problem these last 10 years or so because of the pine beetle killing so many old growth pines, they are just dried out husks waiting for a lightening strike. What gets me is that WE caused all this out of control burning by stopping natural burns, left too much tinder in the forests, now we, and the forest, are paying for it.

I saw on another thread that you are going to spend the summer in Nebraska. Be very very careful with your pipes and such. Nebraska is still in the dark ages when it comes to illegal substances.

Oh, yes. We are holding nothing and everything has been cleaned with alcohol.
