I believe having freedom places a moral duty on all of us to protect it. Everything from flying small planes, to speaking our minds about controversial issues to the thousand other freedoms we still enjoy- we are obligated to pass them on.
Where else in the 21st century could private citizens acquire, repair,load and fire a 57mm anti tank gun. I'm not saying every one should run out and buy one. But we could and if we have this much freedom in most states in America, how can we possibly hand down less to our children.
I don't want to tell my grandchildren that "Yes I used to go shoot- ing with your Dad, but the government banned firearms"
Or "Yes we used to drive across western America, but now that's impossible coz we would need government approved papers and proof of need to travel.
How could we look our family members in the eye 20 yrs. from now and admit"I failed to protect freedom in our country"

I'm not sure what one might do with an anti tank gun other than cause injury to persons or property, but then I'm increasingly torn on the issue as it looks daily a lot more like one day (soon?) n the tanks will be turned on ourselves and then yeah you know - they'd be feckin handy so... Ima put this one in "troublesome issues" box for now.
But yeah most freedoms are being given away like they were not hard won.
My Grandfather and father quite literally risked life and limb for the freedoms I had - Not in armed service but on picket lines and street corners - and my generation threw them away for a tax break and cheap digital TV's.
My children are once again living in a prison colony.

There's nothing left to defend.

Give it time things will turn around. Yes - sooner or later, after the 9/11 security hype has died down a little more, there will be some incident hit the news where some aspect of the Patriot Act is abused so badly that the citizenry will be in an uproar. Politicians will realize that they have to get on the popular side of things, and congressional hearings will start up. And then they will roll back the worst of it and put in new protections. Or at least that's what I am hoping for. Like the Church Committee hearings in the 70s that exposed abuses by the CIA and FBI.

Hold the fucking phone, y'all act as if we had a vote on the Patriot Act. We didn't, it was presented as a done deal and we could like it or leave the country.
I, for one, have nowhere to go outside the US.
I'm not happy about the way things have gone since 9/11, many of us aren't, however, the government put such terror in everyone right after, few have recovered and they are still seeing a terrorist around every corner and running every 7-11.

The people themselves have to BELIEVE that they have been infringed upon. Many are still willing to give up freedom for "safety." Look at TSA regulations just in the last 18 months.
So before we talk about revolution, we have to talk about how everyone in the red states still seems to think Obama's a "Moose-lim" and how no one is addressing that 500 lb elephant in the living room that is American complacency. A virtually immovable modernday object.
