That is pretty sad and senseless.

I'd bet it's down to rat poison. The rats eat these poisons and are driven mad with thirst. They leave the house looking for water and are slow and groggy - and the kites eat them.
It happens here with kestrels, frogmouths and owls.
Best bait for rats of you have birds of prey is Gravox powder and concrete mixed dry and left in shallow dishes. They eat it and it solidifies inside their gut. They die but nothing which eats them does.
And they lap it up too.

I live in grouse moor country. Birds of prey are shot and poisoned because they threaten the precious rich wanker targets.

Funnily enough,Philip, the original reintroduced kites were imported from Scotland, out of the frying pan and into the fire seemingly.

Re - Red Kites : They were introduced to the Chiltern hills in southern England, and with no gamekeepers to persecute them they have done very well, spreading over a big area. I have seen them within a mile or two of Windsor Castle. They are a tourist thing where I live - the Galloway Kite Trail - but they don't last long if they stray into grouse country. Neither do Hen Harriers or Short-Eared Owls, two rare and beautiful birds. Buzzards and Kestrels survive through sheer numbers. Foxes, stoats etc are ruthlessly eliminated. Bonnie Scotland eh ? It's snowing this morning !!!!

I live in grouse moor country. Birds of prey are shot and poisoned because they threaten the precious rich wanker targets. Interesting - out here (Idaho) they reintroduced grey wolves a few years ago. And it instantly became one of the left vs. right political shit storms. The local good 'ol boys complain because the wolves hunt the elk and other game they go after. Guess they don't like the competition. I knew things had gotten out of hand when I heard one rancher refer to the wolves as "300 pound super predators".

I knew things had gotten out of hand when I heard one rancher refer to the wolves as "300 pound super predators". Know what you mean about the left / right thing. I can't be doing with the tossers who pay hundreds (thousands?) of £s for a day's shooting - there must be some money in it, to maintain the moors, the keepers, their cottages, a fleet of pick-up trucks etc etc, all for two or three days shooting per season if they're lucky. Nevertheless, I can't ally myself with the bird lovers either. I became disillusioned with an eco-volunteer group I belonged to, and the RSPB (Royal Society for the Protection of Birds) because of the assumed 'people like us' values that coloured every conversation and newsletter. I love birds, but that doesn't automatically make me left-wing, greenie, anti-nuclear power etc. Wolves eh? I wish we could have some here. They would give the sheep something to think about. And the sheepdogs. Call that howling - this is howling .....
