That'd totally rip our planet apart. Let's keep them away for now.

I don't think we really understand how light actually works! And is the speed of light a constant? I wouldn't bet on it! So the whole subject of spectroscopy, as applied to the stars, suddenly has a big question mark over it. Look at the work of Goethe on light: www.rainengineering.com/ether/Light&Electricity/light_and_electricity.htmlSo the distant stars might actually be a lot closer than we think. I dunno!

Goethe has a very different stance on how light works than common science of today. We thank Goethe for our current colour wheel in painting and on computers. Yes, light speed isn't a constant in our universe. Proof is simple: large gravity wells will and do curve light around them. We see this and have names for it: gravity lense, solar curviture, and so forth. What substance do you know that goes as fast when following a bent path, as a straight one? Exactly!
