I have no problem with defending rights. That's the overwhelming majority of my political activity.
I'm talking about it in the context of the right of armed self defense.
Why the assumption that defending THAT right means you have to assert that you defend others, too?
They kinda all go together, don't they?

My friend just told me "I think you're arguing with the choir here. Just let 'em sing and shut up."

There is no assumption, the right to bear arms is but one right that is under threat, isn't it? I don't see it as a cafeteria, where you can pick and choose which rights to defend, all rights must be defended.

I used to hate America. And Americans. I used to say "America is a sick country. We can only hope it's terminal." All I ever saw of it was your army invading people and stealing their resources or taking over their drug trade...and the hideous Hawaiian shirt clad tourist ship retired real estate salesmen who arrived on P&O and proceeded to tell us all very loudly how much better West Texas was. Or the rich alternative hippie types who gravitated to Byron Bay and built out the beach while they were advocating their earth based spiritual pathways and sipping latte's in the cafe. And your shit TV shows. But then I got on the Net and met lots of you and realised how racist I was . Like Glow I find many Americans to be charming, forthright, informed and funny. I don't want it to die at all now. I just don't understand why you have let your govt and your churches do this to you. Or why you all seem to work so hard for so little return. For the richest nation on earth (as it once so proudly boasted of being) there's a shitload of people living on or well below the poverty line and they have been for some time. Yet en masse you seem to vote for "even more of the same medicine" time after time. Talk of scaling back the military or raising the minimum wage seems to scare the shit out of the electorate. Govt subsidised medicine is like saying "drink hemlock" to so many of them and few of them seem to have the first notion of what either a socialist or a fascist is. "Half of all Americans have never voted in a Presidential election and half have never read a newspaper. We can only hope it's the same half." Gore Vidal. But I don't think it is.

I wish I could point to a specific date and say, "Here, this is where it went bad."
The real truth is far different. In our beginning only a white, free man who owned property and was over the age of 25 was allowed to vote. Women, indentured servants and slaves were in complete submission to the male overlords. Even then it was the wealthy and those in prominent positions that held office. Uninformed voters lined up behind their favorite godhead and loudly proclaimed and fought for them. The press was biased and partisan.
Fast forward to today. Nothing has changed.

That's astonishing. There are 168 hours in a week and in some states you need to work in excess of 130 of those just to house yourself? What the fuck are you supposed to pay for water and heat out of?
Why don't you rise up in the streets? It's not like you lack the fucking fire power is it?

Forced communal living I guess is the answer. When we are in the state parks we pay $4.00 per day. $120.00 per month, otherwise we would be completely screwed.

Govt subsidised medicine is like saying "drink hemlock" to so many of them and few of them seem to have the first notion of what either a socialist or a fascist is. The US still lives in the shadow of the cold war. Stuff like universal healthcare is seen as socialist and that equals communist. Any time someone talks about adding additional services, other people start squawking about how it will drive up taxes. Or how it's unfair to the rest of the hard working citizens, etc. I thought that way for a long time too. It's easy to feel that way when you have a solid job that provides decent health insurance, though that is getting rarer over time. It took me seeing things from the other side to get a more balanced view. My current occupation involves providing mental health services to people of very low income, and I've been able to see what they have to put up with on a daily basis. Yes a few are out to milk the system, but most of them struggle just to keep their heads above water.

I don't believe having guns should be a right, since it affects other people's rights... not to be shot.
