I remember the first video games when they came out, Space Invaders, Frogger, Starcastle, Asteroids, all OK, and well worth the 10p it cost to play them. My favourite was Bombjack, used to get some astronomical scores on that, and 10p would last up to three quarters of an hour. Then when I got my first PC, I had "Quake" installed. That started my love of the FPS genre. Shame really, because it's the genre that's produced some really shit games.
Delta Force, Black Hawk Down was a great game for it's day, I still enjoy that from time to time, also the Medal of Honour games (which piss all over the more popular Call of Duty) Allied Assault still has one of the most memorable scenes of all time, where you have to take Omaha Beach. By the time you've got through that, you really feel like you've won WWII single handedly. Then you have to work your way through the Bocage, take French villages full of crack German Snipers, and capture a German Tiger Tank. Schools here used it as a History teaching aid, it was that good.
Then I discovered Max Payne. A truly groundbreaking Third person shooter. It runs in a Film Noir style, with Raymond Chandleresque commentary in the cut scenes. It also has slow motion "Bullet time" where it goes all Matrix on you, during gunfights. It's huge, and there is a huge choice of weapons at hand. The details are beautifully worked out by Rockstar games, (The same people who brought us GTA San Andreas) and it's playability hasn't diminished over time at all. Max Payne II is worth a shot too, although it's much smaller. (More like an add on really)
Another groundbreaking game in the FPS style, that I can't recommend enough is Far Cry. The scenery is breathtaking, and you can spend hours just wandering around looking at the surroundings. It's set on an archipelago of Hawaain Islands, and you are a Mercenary trying to find some reporter chick with amazing tits, who's been kidnapped by an evil geneticist. The AI is really believable to. When you engage with the enemy, they don't just run around like headless chickens, they act like real people under fire. Then just when you think you have got the edge, there are the mutants. You find yourself on an island, overrun with genetically enhanced monsters, that really take some killing. It took me months to finish the game, and I still get as much enjoyment as ever from it.
Far Cry II is good too, no Mutants, you are a Mercenary in some Tinpot African country in the middle of a war, and you are trying to find the Gunrunner who is supplying both sides with weapons. Both games use the Cry Tek Engine, which means the environment is huge, and accessible, so if you see an interesting looking mountain on the horizon, it's not just there for show, you can actually go there.
GTA San Andreas? What can I say? An all time classic. More fun than a box of monkeys. Crude, violent, and full of real Hollywood stars doing the voices. The best of the GTA Stable, with a soundtrack to die for. Literally.
All these games are available, for free from the wonderful site that is Pirate Bay. Have fun.

I have both Far Cry 1 and 2. And there is a Third one coming out soon that seems to resemble the first one more than the second (On an Island filled with Mercenaries). A third Max Payne is out soon too, and Rockstar made another Film Noir Game, L.A. Noir where you play as a Detective in the 50's. I had pretty much every Medal of Honor game, including the crappy Modern Warfare one.
One of my favorite games in the FPS genre is Half Life. The first game is really good, while the story of it is very much similar to Doom, with aliens instead of Demons. There's even zombies. But the story of the second one is quite amazing. It's set 20 years after the first game and you awake from stasis to find the human race enslaved by an Alliance of Aliens known as the Combine. You have to team up with the Aliens from the first game and rebel against the combine. You also get a hot hacker chick as a sidekick.
Call of Duty is only famous because it is truly the first game that appeals to the brain dead. It's like a Micheal Bay film, without hot chicks and fast cars. "Lets blow up a heap of shit in slow motion, and put together parts of a story that doesn't make sense because idiots must think it's a good story if it doesn't make sense."

I'm a huge PC gamer. It was PC gaming which taught me everything i know about computers. I build my own and upgrade em myself. No 42 inch screen for me though, even though i do have a TV tuner card in my rig so when i'm doing stuff like Blue Caterpillar or Yahoo answers i usually have the TV on as well. That's why when Storminateacup asks "What you listening to right now?" i never have a proper answer because the box is on, not music. I do use two screens, one 27 inch @1080p and the secondary screen is 24 inches @ 1920 x 1200. I'm such a geek i like to game on my 27 inch screen and on the other, whilst gaming, is a bunch of monitoring software so i can see exactly how much work the components are doing compared to their potential and also temperatures and frames per second. When you go two screens you never go back. When i use other computers ever since i got two screens there just doesn't seem to ever be enough desktop space. The funny thing is, my computer is capable of playing the very most demanding games today on max graphics and 1080p resolution but i spend a hell of a lot of time playing a game called Jewel Quest 2 which is like a puzzle game that even the shittest computer could play in it's sleep. It's pretty addictive. Probably my favourite game of all time was a game which really didn't sell well at all at the time. Not many people liked it but myself and a couple of mates loved it enough to set up LAN (local area network) parties where we'd all link our puters up together and go multiplayer crazy all in one room. Yeah, i'm a massive geek. Anyway, the game was an old RTS called Emperor - Battle for Dune. It's based on the book by Frank Herbert. Sadly, they've taken down the servers so if you aren't willing to LAN it up then there's no multiplayer. My second favourite was an old game made by Microsoft. Yeah, they actually made some pretty damn good games despite being a little bit evil. The game was an MMORPG called Dungeon Siege. Many fun hours and lifelong friends made playing that game. Again, the servers for multiplayer have been pulled so the game is pretty shit now. Yeah - My geek is showing. I took computer language in the late 60's early 70's as a substitute for German for my chemistry degree but no keyboards or monitors back then, just binary punch cards and the puters as big as a refrigerator. I didn't get a modern puter till after my accident in 94. My doctors though they would be good for my brain damage and they are. I run a second 24" monitor and my 10" notebook is always always up and running XP for old hardware and the farm/ranch software. The ranch has a 14 puter network. I run a virtual 32 bit XP OS in my 64 bit W7 Pro for the same reasons. I also have X-!0 home automation, video and security running. I too watch a lot of TV and YouTube on a side or split screen but I use sites like these instead of my tuner card for add free TV. Caution - they're a little buggy, make sure your security is tight. www.tv-links.eu/www.yourtvseri.es/Thanks for all the game suggestions, I probably won't get into it until this fall when my life slows a little. I think the last two home games I played were Pong and Atari Duck Shoot. The only arcade game I got into was Space Invaders. Funny because I just built a gaming computer with an AMD FX-8150 8 core, ASUS Sabertooth X-79 TUF board, 160 SSHD, 2tera of SATAIII, 12G's of RAM, twin 550 GeForces and a 42" LG 3D TV. I got sick of buying a new puter every couple years and figured I can get 6-8 years out of this setup with minor upgrades. I don't even own any games or a joystick. I've thought about getting into gaming for the simple reason I want to hack a Kinect as a mouse. Plus I think using my left hand more on the joystick and Kinect would be good therapy for my brain damage. Do you or anyone else have any game and controller suggestions for a beginner with a big puter.? Nice rig ya got there. Mine: Core2 quad @ 3.4GHz a bit old and soon to be replaced but it's good enough to keep up with my card and that's all you need for a gaming rig. Games don't use more than 4 cores. 4GB RAM HD6970 Suggestions for a controller? If i'm not using the keyboard and mouse for shooters or my flight stick for flying games, i'm using the Logitech Dual Action controller. It's virtually identical to a Playstation controller but for PC. The thing i like about it is that it's tough! It's very well built. My brother, who has a Playstation, has gone through three playstation controllers in the time since i got this Logitech controller.

Thanks - It's a bigger machine than I know what to do with but every day it does more and more and runs 24/7 - it's amazing. The big jump came when I upgraded from a 5G to 20G DSL line. You can stream a half dozen movies and download a half dozen more and never slow it down. Love my broadband and it's only $100 a month. I like Logitech stuff I've had good luck with them over the years, if I get a controller that's what I'll get. You're probably right about the keyboard mouse combo, my knarly old hands and damaged brain are comfy with them. I use a joystick on a lot of our newer farm equipment but I've never used one on my PC. I used a track ball for awhile but can't remember why I stopped. I definitely want to explore Kinect hacks, I could be wheelchair bound at any time and it would be a natural to help automate my home. I've already got an extensive X-10 system in my house, shop and grow rooms.

Nah - Asteroids is old school, tried it in it's day and it never hooked me. I've spent ten times more hours playing pinball than I ever did video games. I'm thinking of new games and games that let me compete on-line with one of you guys or all of you. Is Skyrim for multiple players? What's proper game etiquette, buy or bootleg? Will Xbox controllers work with my PC, or do I need to get one designated for a PC? Skyrim is single player only. You can make an Xbox controller work with your PC www.ehow.com/how_5103667_make-xbox-controller-work-pc.htmlGame etiquette. It's poor form to exclusively download games bootleg style. Most gamers do it coz it's free and shit easy but it has effected me. They stopped making one of my favourite games (Madden football) which comes out every year, for PC, due to the extreme piracy rate. I'm all for downloading a game to see if you like it and if you do, spend the cash and support the makers of the game. If you don't, your favourite game series might be cancelled on your platform because you didn't buy the game. Cracks and stuff that you need to apply to bootleg games often produce false positives from your anti-virus software. It will tell you the crack is malicious when it's actually not. This prevents a lot of people from using bootleg games because they implicitly trust whatever their security software tells them. Unlike Playstation games (not sure about Xbox) you can't trade in any PC games you purchased and are now sick of. 1 PC game = 1 owner because there are people who always opt to register their PC games and clearly, you can't have two registered owners. This kinda sucks because it means you end up with shitloads of titles that you don't play anymore and can't trade or sell. The most important gaming etiquette to remember is when playing online with others.....don't be a dick. Pretty simple really but it's amazing the percentage of people who don't follow this rule. I mean, just because you cannot keep pace with the rest of the Formula 1 drivers on the track at the same time as you doesn't mean you should turn the car around, drive the circuit backwards and try for the biggest crash in the games history........yep, when you crash in F1 2011 it gives you a stat telling what the G-forces were in the accident. Dicks strive for the most G's.

I'll preview a bootleg of a new movie to see if it's worth watching in the theater because I don't trust hyped up movie trailers. And, I pay for most of my music but when it comes to network TV or YouTube videos, I bootleg and rip the hell out of them. I'd probably just view a bootleg copy to decide if the game was worth buying. I don't know if I'd get into a race game, I actually raced SCCA Solo1 in my 67 Mini. I don't associate car racing as a contact sport like they do in NASCAR.

Oh hell yeah, I rip the shit out of movies and music. Just finshed getting a Blu Ray quality copy of Chronicle off Pirate Bay........ Buying music off iTunes is bullshit! From a 99c song on iTunes, the artist gets 9c, the label get 20c and Apple pocket 70c. Fuck that! If i find music i like i'll buy a band shirt or go to their concert but i'm stuffed if i'm gonna help Apple get away with their evil ways like it's all ok.
Too bad BTjunkie decided to fold their cards. It was the best torrent site around. Oh well, Pirate Bay is still good :-)
I'm not sure what SCCA1 is but if it involved driving damn fast in a '67 Mini, it sounds like shitloads of fun!!!
