We are absolutely still suffering from the cold war, darling...look at Allan West claiming that the members of the Congressional Progressive Caucus are all "communists." Look how hard the Fox Newsers are riding that "Obama is a socialist" pony to try to discredit him. All you have to do in this country is say the words communist or socialist and a reliably and pathetically substantial section of the population - my own mother included - freaks out and starts thinking "traitors!" I've lost track of the number of times I've gotten arguments from people when I point out that it's unconstitutional to try to ban a particular political ideology, and that the people who want to ban ideas represent more of a threat to democracy than the folks who think sharing would be pretty. When we finally see state-based solutions to these problems, it will probably come from the Republicans, only because by then the problems will be so bad that it is obvious to everyone that they need to be fixed, and the Right-wing Faithful will say, "Well, if Bush III says we need, we must need it, because of course he would otherwise hate any form of increasing the size of the government." I don't remember any chirp from the faithful when Bush II expanded Medicare with Part D prescription drug coverage, even though it was a huge expansion of government-funded services. Yet Obama tries to fix things and there are cries of "Socialism!" from everyone right of the aisle.

It is a lot about perception and tribalism isn't it? Can you imagine how many people could have been educated for the cost of the last two wars alone?

Remember during October 2008 when he fell over himself to help negotiate the Bailout? He and Bush with their arms round one another saying they had over come party political differences to save teh free world?
Barry lost me then.

Yeah that's a huge issue esp in the US. An Aviation Degree can cost up to $200k - but in the US pilots often start work on less that $20 an hour so go figure how the fuck long it takes to pay that back right?
But if you know a kid in the UK or the US who wants to do med tell them to go ahead...they'll get work here and be paid more than an aussie doc...they'll have the debt paid off and get a travel experiences too.

I have $0.00 of student debt because my parents paid for all of college and grad school. Even though I'll have a masters degree completed by this time next month it doesn't seem likely that I'll be able to get any sort of full time work before I'm old enough to retire. I thought engineering was supposed to be easily employable and good money. Grumble grumble complain. I guess it still is good money and opportunities if you picked the right kind but apparently things like fixing roads and sewers and water treatment centers are for communists now so I'm screwed. So are 80% of the people I graduated with it seems like. A lot went right back to grad school like I did because of the hopeless job situation and most of them still don't have shit to show for it. I thought I was lucky when I got a slave labor internship and even luckier when they actually decided to start paying a little bit but even that's going to be gone once I graduate again.

We need engineers too...the lucky country suffers a massive loss of qualified peeps to o/s and so we have to import them. The loss of qualified tech people to overseas is massively problematic. We even have a name for it...it;s called The Brain Drain'

Damn User. That surprises me too, how can there not be work...oh, Iraq and Afghanistan... Because in civil engineering most of the jobs are either with the government or with someone the government contracted the work out to. AKA communism. It's not like they need to spend any money on infrastructure anyway. Clearly it's doing just fine on its own. Except for the failing grades it gets in almost every possible category. www.infrastructurereportcard.org/

We need the U.S. to invade the U.S. so we can be rebuilt when they are through.

We need the U.S. to invade the U.S. so we can be rebuilt when they are through. Heh. If you haven't seen The Mouse That Roared you should watch it some time if you get the chance. It's pretty much the same idea. Some small country declares war on the US with the intention of losing so that they get rebuilt for free but they accidentally win.
