Not just another "Post a song" thread. Before posting a song, you critique the previous song. This brings an element of interactivity back to the "music thread", so rather than just having an endless list of music, much of which may be unknown to other posters, you are forced to actually listen to the music someone else has put up. So let's post stuff, then either laud it, or rip it apart, according to it's merits. I'll start with someone I consider to be the most culturally important Band ever to come out of America. Not just for their music, but for the ideals and examples they've set over the years to everyone they've touched, from other musicians, to the whole music industry. It just remains for me to pick a particular track. And that's the hard part, because there are so many ripping songs to pick from. Everyone knows a few Dead Tracks, so here's one that most people who aren't Deadheads won't know. From "Aoxomoxoa" here's "Dupree's Diamond Blues". Enjoy.
And from "American Beauty" the beautiful, but heart wrenchingly sad "Brokedown Palace"

I love that first one....Dupree's. It has an old time kind of bouncy ragtime feel to it. Almost like a carnival sound - I think the organ adds a lot to that ... The lyrics too have that old time feel - the down at heel, sad and sorry story og how a woman done brung him low- Like the early 1900's ragtime/Jazz songs - he shot him a jeweller to get a diamond for the woman he's obsessed with. The lexis is very much in tune with that old time feeling too - The "sweet jelly" this woman gives him that's an old black bluesy/jazz sexual reference. It has the feel of telling a story - like Stagger Lee or Frankie and Johnny - a story people knew...an urban legend kind of thing. It doesn't sound like a lot of the Dead stuff I do know...But I like that about it. I'll listen to the other one now. and edit it in. I just didnt want anyone to beat me to that. eta: Brokedown Palace is so, so sad. The lyrics are simple, but incredibly affecting for all that.. As always with The Dead...they don't do trite or easy listening. It's just extraordinary. It coveys this sense of desolation...of utter , all consuming grief. Deep, scarring kind of grief. This isn't something he's going to get over, you just know it. There's an all encompassing sense of loss at leaving. Its also got that feel of the long heritage of black, blues music. The sad stories of loss and leaving they told. The imagery and description are beyond fantastic. Jerry Garcia sings with a sob in his voice when he gets in this mood.....the tune gets into your heart in way that can just make you want to weep. The band also supports that feeling.. The guitar chords are like someone wailing in pain. The pace, funereal almost. A beat that drags your heart down to the depths. Do you know something really sad about that song that got connected to it later? The Grateful Dead were really good friends with Ken Kesey .His son died in a car accident and a few weeks later The Dead sent him tickets to one of their shows. During the show, the group turned to Kesey sitting on one of the side stands, and sang Brokedown Palace to him and he cracked up (as you would). Just the thought of Ken Kesey who was one of life's great jokers and tricksters, suffering such a terrible pain is in itself kind of hard to accommodate. It such an awful irony that someone who made so many people laugh so hard, who laughed so hard himself - had such an abiding pain to live with. The loss of your child. I can't imagine it. I cant imagine surviving it. eta:: Oooh I was supposed to post one too, wanneye?? forgot Everybody Moves, Died Pretty And TISM, Australian Guitar Hero

If you want me to play you need to list one song at a time. My brain can't process twofers.
Whats not to like about a country ballad and a steampunk video of a mermaid get'n fucked.

GaGa can plagiarise many diverse styles - just as fucking well as she's utterly incapable of creating anything even vaguely original. Ugly bitch too. All in all I think I liked her better when she was writing and choreographing soft core porn dance tunes for the Pussycat Dolls. At least they weren't quite so hard on the eye.

Everybody plagiarizes everything and everybody these days but I thought the mermaid fucking was unique.
And I think she carries her common looks with dignity.

I'd better get back on thread before I attract the attention of any administrators. Great video of a 1930's Dakota town. It looks just like I remember our little main street as a kid in the 50's. Witchy should be familiar with 16 Horsepower, they're local. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/16_Horsepower

I'm sorry,I can't like Gaga,she's not a musician,she's not even cabaret,she's a product,to be sold to tweens as an edgier Katy Perry.
Her music, and I use that word quite loosely, appeals to the lowest common denominator and belongs in underage discos and the cheesier of nightclubs.
I'm going to take this opportunity to plug and get feedback on my mate Connor J O'Brien's band The Villagers. Here's some of their work(Connor writes most if not all of the songs).
Becoming A Jackal

Meh - It's not a bad song - I'll make a copy and listen to it again in the car but the video sucks - who the feck wants to watch pork rot.
I'm sitting in front of big speakers and a big monitor and I want the total entertainment experience..........
What I like about Gaga is the way she's designed herself to make money. The women is sharp, check out some of her interviews like 60 Minutes, she makes no apologies and is laughing all the way to the bank. And I think she a much better role model for kids than some of the corporate sponsored pariahs like Katy.

Here's a quirky little song with a great video.
One of the band members is a geek that did the software for the vid.

If you like dogs you'll love this.
They produce their own vids and spent hundreds of hours with the dogs to make this one.
It's amazing when you consider it's one continuous stage show with no stops or editing.

I'm going to take this opportunity to plug and get feedback on my mate Connor J O'Brien's band The Villagers. Here's some of their work(Connor writes most if not all of the songs). Becoming A Jackal Bearing in mind the fact that The Villagers probably spent considerably less on the entire video than Gag-Gag spends on her nail artist, I think they've done a bloody good job of it. It's also safe to assume that they didn't copy another artist's song chord for chord in penning the tune, and that in live performances, they're not prone to miming it. All of which go a long way toward putting them in the category of an actual band, rather than mass market mind morphine, which is surely what Gag-Gag is. It's hardly revolutionary for a shit dance music artiste to be advocating Gay Rights now is it? More your sound commercial decision really, bearing in mind that a good 50% of her potential buying public are going to be falling out of gay nightclubs around the globe 5 nights a week. And the other half are busy trying to find a way to shock mummy and daddy in retaliation for being made to do their Year 7 maths homework instead of watching Supernatural. If I want to watch a mob if talentless venture capitalists make obscene amounts of money by producing absolutely nothing of real value, then I'll sit in the gallery of the Stock Exchange, not pay through the arse for tickets to a Gag-Gag spectacular. When I want a night out experiencing some music, give me a crew of lads like The Villagers every time. You've played a few of their things here and I think maybe on Yahoo too in the past. I really enjoy them. The human voice voice not pushed through an auto tuner is rare enough these days to make one sit up and listen all by itself. They appear to have spent a deal more on their instruments than on their wardrobe and hairstyles too. Once again, a refreshing change. Fancy having the temerity to expect your audience will come to listen to a few tunes and not to see a laser light spectacular, with a chorus line and pyrotechnics displays to take your mind off the fact that the "music" is nowt but generic aural spam. I expect they'll never own their own lear jet or play to a stadium full of dress alikes chanting their names because of that - and more power to them for us being able to say so. Ah musicians. I remember them. They were quite common at one stage, but have been on the endangered list for the best part of two decades now.

I'll bet you were a Madonna fan though weren't cha? Same act for another generation. I like to think my diverse musical tastes can tolerate a little spam every now and then.
Only two of the guys are music students the others are science majors. I doubt that last vid cost a $1000.
And as far as the blokes video, he should get Regwah's Gemma to do one for him.
Can you find some of her vids to show everyone, I'll look too.

Another mindless bitch who made money in place of music and was inexplicably lauded for being a ground breaker. Debbie Harry could out sing, out sex and out provoke that talentless Brooklyn bred tart any day of the week!
