I remember the day very well. I had just turned 13 the day before and I remember remarking during the news "what an odd birthday present" My Grand mother was pissed when I said that, but my dad was amused. He always said JFK was going to start a war one day unless one of the mob family's decided to settle old scores....I guess they did just that.

One of the first things JFK did was screw up the Bay of Pigs invasion of Cuba. Cancelled the air support and changed the location of the invasion to an area that had no where to go but the swamp if they failed(and they did). Essentially, Kennedy did to the Cuban rebels what Bush Sr. did to the Iraqis who wanted to overthrow Saddam.
Because of the failure at the Bay of Pigs, we ended up with the Missiles of October. Kennedy handled it, but it never should have happened. The primary reason he was killed was that he issued an Executive Order shutting down the Federal Reserve two weeks before. Johnson reversed it as one of his first official acts.

One of the odder coincidental vagaries of history is that Lincoln was assassinated in the Ford Theatre - and Kennedy was assassinated in a Ford Lincoln.
Just sayin'
