Little people are PO'ed....but should they be?

There has been some press that the "Little People" are upset with Universal Studios for casting "regular sized" people for the roles of the dwarfs in the movie Snow White and the Huntsman. Here's my thing, producers did the same thing for LOTR. Maybe no little people auditioned or didn't do good in the audition or simply didn't have what was being looked for. I don't think it is purely because they wanted to "use a new technology". Any other thoughts?

You can't call them midgets anymore huh? Well for clairty I will be using come PI statements in my comment so if you get butthurt over that shit, don't read my post.

I don't know, everyone is always going to have a problem with something. What if the little person they used wasn't a dwarf but a midget? Would the dwarves pitch a fit? Or what if one of the "little people" got hurt doing their own stunts because I find it hard to believe there are that many midget stuntmen or women out there.

It's a movie, if they could do it completely people free, I can only imagine they would, think of the cost savings yanno?

I dunno. I'm not a dwarf so I can't speak for them but it does feel odd to me. I guess the answer lies in the true reason why they did not use dwarves.

Maybe there are so few dwarves that they don't have a big enough pool to get decent actors. I dunno.

There is the guy from Jackass, and the guy who plays the lawyer and the one that does the country music videa and ummmm...... Damn, you would think thre would be more wouldn't ya? Then again I imagine it is proportionate to the # of working actors in the same way it is proportionate to the general population as a whole.

I think all the ones from the Wizard of Oz are dead, so you may very well be right dawnkey.

Peter Dinklage was probably busy with Game of Thrones. Warwick Davis is the only other one I can think of that I actually know by name but it looks like he's been in a lot of stuff recently so he probably wasn't available. The dwarves and hobbits from Lord of the Rings were all normal sized people despite playing creatures that are 3-4 feet tall.

Plus the movie Willow.......I think they just didn't have enough people to fill the roles. They digitally made the people look like dwarves....height-wise.

I think you're on the money with the notion that there simply aren't enough actors who fit the bill to fill such roles. There are far fewer people affected by dwarfism seeking work in the entertainment field than there used to be. This is largely a result of more stable employment opportunities opening up in other fields since anti discrimination laws have been expanded and more vigorously pursued over the last decade or so. For a long time there were no other options open to them - it was "Carnival Freak Show, pantomime novelty act or starvation" for most.

"Dwarf tossing" was, in the 1980's and 90's a regular event at a lot of Australian pubs. It was esp popular on The Gold Coast of Queensland - a tourist sex pot and gaming mecca that makes Vegas look classy and restrained....but with beaches. Crap beaches by Australian standards actually, but the sort of cashed up but uncultured fool who holidays there never ventures far enough afield to know that and as our crap beaches are better than most places show piece ones, they still think they're getting a sundrenched holiday in coastal heaven. ...with hookers and blow.

I thought the "sport" had been outlawed, but not according to Wikipedia. It has been made illegal in several other countries though and honestly I haven't heard of anyone here hosting such an event since Noah was in short pants.

I can't help thinking that this is a rare display of Australia having made some small step in the direction of cultural advancement.

It's appalling to think that because some people seem to think of these people as an amusing sideshow attraction, drunken fuckwits outside nightclubs can feel free to engage in a freeform and involuntary version of the sport as an exuberant kind of exercise: with catastrophic results for their hapless and defenceless victim.
